![]() Ones I tried looked like they had around 1cm raise, forgot most of their names but one I remember is Sakurai Now I am wondering if a huge raise like the Humphrey guitar will actually be as good as having a cutaway. ![]() I was considering a cutaway similar to Gerard Audirac's like some designs I showed you, but it seems like luthiers don't favor to build it, and I got to play some raised fretboard guitars and they were okay at giving more access. If you really don't want to go with a cutaway, then a raised fretboard will probably just make things a little bit easier above the 12th fret. A luthier-built guitar designed from the outset to be a cutaway should lose anything significant in terms of tone and volume. The main reason for this is that most cutaways classicals are factory built instruments, and frequently are designed around use with a pickup. Classical players tend to be very resistant to cutaways, partly because of the look, but also under the mistaken notion that they can't compete tonally. ![]() James Lister wrote:A cutaway is always going to give you better access to the upper frets than a raised fingerboard, and it shouldn't cost much extra over a standard guitar if anything.
